Le penseur -- what a brilliant and witty contemporary take-off on Rodin! While many people have consciously posed to mimic the sculpture, it's amazing to have captured a candid natural moment so close to the original...bringing the monumental into everyday life. The photographer then transforms the viewer into a state of contemplation: is the subject musing and creating, or listening through ear buds? Is he thinking about his next cup of iced latte? What is his destination?
While the bronze nude is timeless without reference to culture or period, this image with smartphone could only be from the 21st century. Unlike the statue which carves an expansive space, the twists of the passenger's body are compressed by his bag and the metal bars. The camouflage design is reminiscent of the fluid shapes of light and dark that reflect on the sculpture's muscles. Similar shapes are drawn in the air by the red cords of the ear buds. A great composition with the diagonal elements, coffee cup, and subway shapes. This stranger on a train offers much more to think about. NOMINATED!
