The Cathedral of the city of Maringá, in the south of Brazil, is a Roman Catholic cathedral built between July 1959 and May 1972 for the 25th anniversary of the city. The church reaches 124 m in height, making it the tallest church in South America and the 16th tallest in the world. The foundation stone, a piece of marble from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome blessed by Pope Pius XII, was laid on August 15, 1958.
The cathedral's modernist conical shape was inspired by the Soviet sputnik satellites. The word poustinik assigns a person dwelling in a poustinia, that is, someone who move away from the material world to be closer to God. Idealized by archbishop Dom Jaime Luiz Coelho, it was designed by architect José Augusto Bellucci.
I made this shot while in the city for my cousin's wedding in 2015.
