Great variety - some awsome shots.

The offical contest rules are Submissions do not have to be taken in the same month as the contest https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/monthly-photo-contests/4162-official-contest-rules.html

I for one am ok with that rule. We may want to limit it to something like within a year - but i think the contest would suffer if we restrict the photo's to the month of the submissiom.

There are a few weekly challenges that have this rule - I think the monthly at worst case within a year or as is .

I agree that monthly contests should contain photos taken in that month specifically for that contest, unless the rules allow old pics from your files.
These pics are indeed very impressive, making voting quite difficult, I could vote for 13, but have whittled it down to 5. Well done to all the contestants!

I didn't get out to take one so I didn't post one. Having reread the rules, it clearly says that the picture does not have to be taken that month. I had assumed, wrongly, that as this is the 'monthly competition' all pictures should have been taken for the competition.
I don't have a problem with this but if people can't take a better picture this month than they did two years ago, then they are not applying themselves.

The prize, as far as I am concerned, is recognition from my peers that my photography is improving and that I can take a good photograph to order. For this reason I will continue to post picture that I have taken for the month concerned but that is just a rule I have made for myself for personal reasons.

Regardless of the rules, good luck to everyone who entered.

I actually had not thought so much about shooting in the month of contest for the contest. Upon thinking about it more you should be encouraged to take a picture from that month. I do but don't always have it , and the truth be told sometimes existing pictures from days gone buy are just better.

Given the global membership, people's schedules, etc ... for example for me to do "Bug Macros" in January would be ...ummm difficult ha ha while my Australian neighbors would be in the prime of 'Bug Season" ... to exclude some members because of location ,etc would also be unfair ......

Argument can be made both ways - I prefer the way it is , but would abide with any new rules ....

I did not realize that any image would count as in the rules...
Thats cool and I have no problem with it. However, IMO it is a rule that should be amended. It would add a certain excitement to it I believe...Just my opinion.

Rules do allow for shots taken in other months- wanted to participate!

I didn't post my best night shot because it was from December. and I didn't have any others, so good luck to the winners.
I had just gotten my K100D Super in January 2008, and so I don't have a large portfolio, so after reading the contest rules that state that the shot posted to the contest doesn't need to be shot in the same month as the contest, I thought I would give this a try. I think we all are wanting to see how our work stacks up, etc, and so I think it's great to see all different kinds of night shots and participate in the joy of photography!

Will DEFINITELY work on a unique shot for the September contest, though- I love shooting indoors, common objects, and am looking forward to it!

Contest

Quote from tcdk
"I do, kind of, see your point, but I think the main point of the contests are to give people a Chance to show of what's possible (with a Pentax)."

With this statement in mind wouldn't it be nice for the National Geographic pro's amongst us to submit their work as what's possible (not for entry in the contest) this way us amateurs might have a chance at getting recognition from the contest.

Also if you narrowed down the subject, dimensions, time in other words published a book of rules <G> and disqualified the photos that didn't qualify it would be easier to choose

As it stands now I can't vote for instance how do you choose between #2,4,10,17,20. 21, 30 ect and some of the less dramatic but very good night scenes which I thought the contest was all about.

Larry

PS Great pictures

Some of us aren't very good at reading the directions I see.

Wish a little friendly competition didn't stir up the animosity as it does. Its really too bad.

No matter the changes if any, it will always be difficult to choose. Looking forward to this months entries.

Good luck everyone.

I have to agree, there are some really top class shots this time.
A comment on the above queries though
. No where in the rules do I see anything about the photo having to be taken that month. My understanding is that the Monthly competition is about the SUBJECT, and if you take a shot from your archives, or go out and take a shot to meet the subject, fine either way. (Did I miss something however??)

. I have said before and and restate, it is only be my personal gripe, but an anonymous vote is just that anonymous, so I feel that publishing your choice of shots and "what is great" whilst the voting is on is not in the idea of anonymous.
Else one could tout for votes if so desired.
Just my personal opinion, and I dont mean to offend anybody.

Once a big "well done" to all entries.......now back my voting decisions

I'm sorry, but it's silly to suggest that a monthly free contest should only include photos taken that particular month, when that is not part of the criteria anyway.

The contest is thematic, so each month covers a different topic/challenge/situation. Dare I say the point is not to take pictures during a particular month but to share photos which fit the theme of the month. After all, we all know some photos are once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.

Now, had the photos been taken with non-Pentax cameras, are off-theme, or violate any other rule, then sure, disqualify them.

21 is absolutely a stunning photo. Looks like a pedestrian bridge, though i can't tell where.

Photo timing

I, too, am one of those that submitted an "not of August" photo. I did not see anything that actually stated the photos had to be from the month of August. My interpretation was merely that the topic for August was night photography.

I think that if it were meant to be taken in that month of the contest, it would have been explicitly stated that way. It wasn't, and other posts in the threads about the who, what, why of the contests seem to indicate that there's no rule stating the photo must be taken in the month of the contest, only that it needs to meet the theme.

There is at least one photo where I can't see any indication that the photo was actually taken at night. So, I have to take the photographer's word by the fact he submitted it against this contest topic that it actually was a night shot. In a similar manner, I accept the photos submitted in good faith and submit mine similarly, expecting that if there is some intent that the photo be taken in that month, it will explicitly be stated, otherwise any reasonably recent photo meeting the criteria is acceptable.

And yeah, I know: the definition of 'reasonably recent' is subjective. I could also argue that any photo could be submitted as a night shot since it's night somewhere on this planet at the time I took the photo.

First time voting so I had to think about "things". Nice photos!

Hint:
Instead of marking down the numbers, I copy/paste, pictures and all, to my word processor. Then I deleted all but the best six!

Works for me!
