This is the best of many wonderful portraits. This person has lively eyes and a warm smile. The background is not overly distracting, but it could be improved by darkening the yellow areas.

The light is soft. That softness enhances the perceived softness of this subject. The background highlights suggest a sunny day. How then did the photographer achieve this soft effect? By the use of shadow of course. How then was this shadow achieved? By one of the many ways of creating soft shadows. The trick is to find a way to achieve this: Reflection, umbrellas, fill flash. We don't know how this was achieved. We do know this effect is pleasing.
