I really miss the possibility to vote for 1-st, 2-nd and 3-rd place and feel really sorry for having to select just one of these photos.
Some of them do not fit in my personal definition for a portrait but should there be boundaries to the art?

Good foto, not so well done, with a sensible touch : human before the art

No. 6

It might not be a head shot but the similarity of the woman and the art is stunning. I love it! That's my choice, without question.

There were a lot of good portraits, but #6 had a CONTENT that overruled them all for me.

Eight - it looks natural; less posed than most.

Voted! (I always have a problem being critical about other peoples work, everybody's a critic, even when they can't do it themselves!)

Some really lovely work.
Some thought provoking.
Some pretty.
Some beautiful.
Some made me smile.
Some raised an aaaah.
All worthy.

Well done everyone
Nice way to summarize the finalists. Yes, criticism is easy. I try to have a improvement suggestion to offer when I do so.

I have been a portrait photographer for over 42 years and i have a Master from PPA, and to be hones the only one that is a true portrait is #12 and I am not to impress with any of these. Don't get me wrong, these are good photos but i will classify them as candid. To my judgement the one I like is not in the selection, the one with the lady siting in front of the old theading machine.

Welcome to the forums!

IMO 1 is a true portrait and nice lighting, but not perfect. I voted for 1, but wished it wasn't signed/watermarked. The only thing I didn't like about 12 was the shadows from his glasses. I found them distracting. My favorite was 7, but felt it wasn't correct category.

So, I have to ask, not to challenge your assertion but because I don't know--what makes a true portrait? Why is #12 a portrait, but the others aren't?

It's definitely #2 for me. A lot of these show very professional work though; your subjects and you should be proud!

This is a mix of several types of portraiture and journalism.

Perhaps it needed at least two different categories? Or four?

Mainly, Portraiture works well displayed on the wall, vs Journalism works well displayed in the magazine.
Also, Portraiture is usually pleasingly staged (involving setup/studio labor), vs Journalism looks fresh/raw "in the now" (not staged).

So, for portraiture, we have 1, 3, 4, 10; and thematic portraiture 5, 7, 12.
Almost half of the finalists are portraiture.

Thanks for the feedback, Daniel. Out contests are normally fairly loosely-defined, casting a wide net for members with existing shots that are generally on theme, but with some "wiggle room" If the shots have made it through to voting, they're considered suitable entries for the contest
