Golden-crowned rainbow serpent
Contest Number: 158 Contest Theme: Open Lens: Tamron 90mm Macro Camera: Pentax K-5 Shutter Speed: 1/180s Aperture: F19

I know from experience that my snake photos go down like a lead balloon around here but I like them and I'm no good at guessing what others like.

The Golden-crowned Snake is a small nocturnal elapid snake of Eastern Australia.

Way too close for my liking... I'd need to get 2000mm macro lens for this sort of subject.

and the 90mm gives you a reasonable working distance. I took some shots with the 15mm too but I didn't put my eye to the viewfinder for that lens and the shots suffered as a result.

The book says "regarded as harmless, although bites from larger specimens may cause discomfort".
It's head is about the size of my little finger and they prey on small reptiles and frogs. I try to keep out of striking range anyway!

Aye that’s like saying, large trucks are regarded as harmless.... when parked.

The rest of the time... not so harmless.

It is a roller skate, not a truck!

We do have some proper "truck" snakes in Australia.

I use a DA* 300 for them.
Actually, for the brown snake I was more worried about the trucks. It was on a grain haul road!
