Early snow along the Maine Central Tracks through Crawford Notch, NH

This photo is taken of one of three modules of my HO scale Model Railroad "The Eastport Branch" The railroad goes around the basement walls and is of several scenes of railroading in the US, Northeast & New England. This scene is modeled after the extraordinary scenery of the Maine Central Railroad's (now Conway Scenic Railroad) line that runs through Crawford Notch, NH, in the heart of the White Mountains. The scene is typical of mid to late October weather where an early snow can fall while leaves are still on the trees. The scene is built along a basement wall and is only 6 1/2" deep. The "distant" mountains are painted on the wall. Shooting photos in this environment requires a custom white balance setting, use of 5,000K lighting (daylight), a good sturdy tripod, maxing out the f stop for depth of field. Fortunately the K3 and the DA lens does an excellent job. After the photos the loose snow had to be cleaned up with a nearby vacuum, it's never good to have the flakes work their way into the locomotive gearboxes.
