Technically all are good portraits, but most are reenactments of many of the same type of portrait photo I have seen a hundred times. For me #12 shows a young boy who is engaged in a task that appears to be very important, with some difficulty involved. The slight wrinkle on his forehead tells me he is concentrating on getting his task accomplished correctly, and is concerned he might not make it.

I wonder how many of these were cropped in post or for the contest.

I think 14 is, in its way, the best portrait, but I wish it were in higher resolution.

I don't regularly view these contests. It's really interesting to see the modern photos against those shot decades ago.

I had to pass on many of the submissions because of what the eyes were or were not doing. Have to at least see them. 7 I like because there’s purpose in his gaze. Expression helps a lot too.

Right now my feel says #4. I think they are all great and my feelings can change as timing may alter the feeling. Like a beautiful day. Sometimes I stop and notice more and at times I’m too busy.

I'm not going to say which one I picked. I also don't do portraits but prefer natural settings, lighting and composition/storytelling over most studio work when I do look them over.

...which is probably like cookie monster saying he doesn't eat cookies often, but when he does he eats them in a horrifically violent manner.
