Cottage Furnace 1854

In the Appalachian and nearby regions, back in the mid 1800's, there was a thriving iron making industry. Structures were built using on the spot stone that was cut and shaped. The masonry was dry. This one is Cottage Furnace build 1854. Charcoal was made from the forests. It seems a lot of pig iron was manufactured using this method over many decades. It has been about to collapse since I was a child many decades ago. This one is up in the Daniel Boone National Forest. The area is closed off now. But a person can still access the site if you want to walk a ways. It seems vandals are too lazy to walk. I tried to make the photo feel old. I wanted the image to give a feeling of antiquity to suit the subject. To compare, it was a very bright day, and the greenery was brilliant. Mid summer in Kentucky. Hot and humid.
