In the city of Puerto de la Cruz, on the island of Tenerife, there is a cupola on a volcanic rock called the Friar's Rock (Peñón del Fraile). It came from the eruption of the Tahoro volcano in 1430, sliding down the cliffs and slopes, to stop, cool down and solidify in that place.
There was a friar from Icod de los Vinos, named Juan Jesús, who arrived in the 18th century. He liked to climb that rock and spend long hours, meditating and praying, for many years.
In 1813 a Genoese named Luis Lavaggi , fell in love with these lands and carried out several improvement works in the city, among them he enhanced the rock, building an embankment and a cross in the place where the friar prayed.
Later in 1855, the cupola with 6 columns was built, which since then remained intact, except for a restoration in 2003, adding a new bronze dome.
