Giant Banana Spider

Also known as the "calico spider", "writing spider" and "giant wood spider" the giant banana spider thrives in South Carolina's Lowcountry where its intricate web provides a steady supply of flies and mosquitos for food. Their webs have a golden color that glistens in the sunlight, which helps attract bugs and also provides camouflage against the forest. Females like this one are much larger and more striking than the males and often eat them once mating is complete (!).
