This is a deceptively simple natural history portrait, but it's incredibly rare to get all the elements aligning so well: an engaging pose; both throat and neck details clearly visible; catchlight in the eye; viewing angle and ambient lighting combining to bring out iridescence in the feathers; appealing colours in the background; foreground vegetation that's interesting but doesn't obscure the photogenic body parts of your subject. Nominated.
