It's difficult to choose, all of them are great.

I voted for #4 as well. It was the eyes which captured my attention.

Very hard to choose from such an excellent selection. I try to select by three criteria.
Is the picture aesthetic artistic?
Is it interesting?
Is it an unusually difficult point of view to capture?

There were many that embraced these parameters, and my apologies to those others I would also loved to have selected. It was so so close, but since only one could be picked, it was #2

Would I want a print of this photo on my wall? This greatly narrows down the photos.
I do the same! Although I find it is a bit too arbitrary at times. For example, I like the spontaneity, the challenge and the pipe/mouth analogy of #12 and I think it is a harder to get image than some of the others. But I wouldn’t frame it and hang it at home. Not because it is not good, but it’s not the kind of thing I’d hang. Does that make sense?

All the finalist photos are well done. Number six edged ahead for me. The composition, the meal catch, colors, and the bokeh are well done. Again, all the finalists' entries were great.

Birds

They are all outstanding shots! I prefer the action shots as they are the most challenging. Then close choice between 5 and 6. The bird pose on 6 is a little better and the colors just pop with an excellent shinny eye. Shot from slightly below the bird seems to work most effectively. You can see the all bird securely holding one to the branch including its left foot. I also like phots to tell a little story. 6 is a king fisher and they eat mostly small fish from rivers. It's not so well known that they also eat lizards as depicted. I will vote for 6.

Wow, these are all amazing. I have a love of owls, and I loved the differences between the impressive female Great Horned Owl, and the adorable Saw-whet Owl. I used to work with raptors, and the one I started with was a Saw-whet, so there was a bit of nostalgia there. And, I too, like to think which pics I would frame and display, and the Saw-whet would fit a place in my hallway just perfectly, so I chose #11.
