90 shots to choose from -> 9 to choose?

Anyway, decent bunch of images and obviously people have done their homework and browsed through the previous entries of the same theme both here and in dpreview!

Ahhh this would make sense
That's correct, voting options are based on 10% of entries(rounded down).

Thanks to all who submitted beautiful and inspirational photos.

A procedural question: In future contests, might there be a way for a voter to effectively indicate if one image is, in the voter's opinion, far superior to the others? I'm asking for a system of weighted voting.

Thanks very much.
If you have a suggestion, you should start a thread in Site Suggestions and Forum Help.

Personally I don't think such a change is necessary, after all, it is primarily a fun contest.
Now that the winning entry will go into the PF yearly calendar, I think that is reward enough.

This is not meant in any way to be antagonistic but this is a fun contest and the subject matter is open to interpretation by the entrants. If an entry is way off base, it probably won't get as many votes.
Negative comments detract from the fun aspect and aren't necessary, nothing is written into the rules about it generally common sense is satisfactory. It's interesting that (and this is true not just of this month) those who make the negative comments don't have entries themselves.
Once the voting is open, the individual entries are available for you to comment on specific ones that you think don't make the grade if you really feel that way inclined.
Failing that, it isn't necessary to post anything, it isn't a requirement, you can just vote if that's all you wish to do.
You are also free to start a thread in Site Suggestions and Forum Help if you feel that the contest can be improved upon.

It was a stretch to pick the 9 for me, as lots of them gave a quick first impression that they are nice, but you look closely and too many technical and composition flaws. I think it is a hard subject to really keep the "frame" filled with just enough to hold the eye without too many distractions.

I agree - it's going to be a stretch. I see lots of nice images that are well framed, but I am not seeing a second contained frame with subject matter inside them. Technically, I think a majority of the entries miss the target. - Or, it could just be me.

You don't have to vote for 9 shots -> If one picture is superior, give the vote for only that shot. If there's two super shots, give votes for both. If you vote for 9, the superior shot(s) won't get the nod, right?

I know that this is mainly just for fun competition, but I don't understand why criticism should be completely avoided. We're looking for the best shot of certain theme and some people have interpreted it well, but lacking the technical excellence. Some other have the opposite (which imo is worse) and few manage to combine both and those few shots are most of the time picked up as winners/top3.

But yeah, it is funny if people with most criticism are the people who don't even participate. Would certainly love to see their shots. Or well, maybe they are just professionals...

This is going to be tough! I'll be taking my time thinking these over...

And you get to select 9 since you can always (roughly) select 10%

That is why the individual thread are available, you can critique there if you wish. The reason that it is not welcome in the voting thread is a) as has been seen here, general criticism does nothing but take away the fun and b) if it's about individual photographs, it has the potential to affect the voting, which would be unfair.

I agree. Lots of really excellent images, but the contest was about -- as you point out -- a picture of something with another framed pictured contained within. There were many misses for fulfilling this criteria.

Well Gary,

I for one thank you and all the others at PF for hosting these wonderful FUN contests!! These drive me both artistically and technically to explore new techniques and photographic genres.
I can say for sure that my entry is definitely lacking in the technical aspect but I had a blast and kept this contest in mind over the course of the entire month while shooting and learning my new camera and hobby (see obsession) until I found just the right combination of subject matter and the opportunity to frame it without staging it.
I think that these and the mini challenges are a blast and I look forward to the day (hopefully) that I can be in the top 25% or so of the vote getters in one of these competitions.
I also submit material to the critique forum when I feel like I can't quite place a problem with my photo( and you, Ash, and Rense are sure to point it out!! ) but I like hearing the "attaboys" on the fun contests as it keeps me motivated.

Mine and others' comments were on the entries as a whole. It wouldn't make sense to go into 12-18 different ones to say they are too cluttered composition wise, if one wants to comment on that many. I think you are taking the criticism too hard, and I don't see how it's negative, if we don't mention specific shots. That would be more negative individually calling them out on their own page.

I see it as a way of maybe getting better submissions the next time around. Make people work a little harder to win if we throw out there that some are weak. I don't see any harm posting negative comments, and especially since I don't see you taking issue with the people who say, "so many good ones this month". Those posts are ok, though?

Some great shots here, I can't understand why my image is still so small, it was the larges that the rules would allow.I think I will have to get advice before entering next month.

Lots of good images. As always, I had to pick the ones I think best represented the contest and have exceptional image quality as well. Good luck, guys!

There are some amazingly creative interpretations of the challenge's theme. ...very very inspirational! I was left thinking to myself "wow, I never imagined doing that" almost every time I paged down.

[edit]

To you vocal critics; not only here in this thread but many months past. Get the F*k over yourselves. I'm F*k sick of this and your sh*t. There's some amazing stuff here.

Sure, some are not up to par in your eye; or in my eye either. But also, Not everyone will agree with what you, or I for that matter, consider of merit to make a "good" photo. If you have a problem with one of them -- DON'T VOTE FOR IT.

And are you really serious, that you didn't know those photos all have their own thread in the parent section of the voting forum? Really? Stop being an anonymous internet bully, and if you don't like it, go there and tell them ... and tell them why so they might be able to correct it in future photos taken. Everyone will be better for it. But to "shit on" most of the competition for what I think are a vast minority of photos that aren't really all that hot....? That makes me think there's something wrong with you.

You don't think you can pick 9? TRY IT. You'll find you can vote for less. Then you do it in silence, and that's that! Or again, you gotta get something out? Go to the person's individual thread for the photo(s) you have an objection to, and try and help make them a better photographer.

Again, I'm NOT only picking any single person out or talking just this month but have been reading this going back months and months -- and I've been holding back myself from exploding for months ... And I can safely say some of the things I've seen some of photos the haters have shared are "not so hot" either, just like the rest of us, so STFU! Only once I see that every photo you take is of a caliber to be framed and hung in a gallery or museum do you have a right to generally shit on the contestants in these voting threads.

...you are now being returned to your regularly scheduled programming...

When?

I agree, so many to choose from and so hard to choose only 9. I can only HOPE to be the running! That aside, when will the results be announced, and will there be any way to find out where I fell into the line up after all is said and done?

To all of the members here, please let me know what sort of things I can do to improve my quality of work. I understand everybody has their own opinion about photography (and you see it in the comments about what caught or distracted someones eye) and that is ok with me, I'll just take it all put in in a file and try them one at a time and see what works for me. Thanks for letting me ramble, and good luck to all..

I'm already in the B&W for this month, so look out! I'm trying for that #1 spot!!!
