The bad deal to me is that any time Pentax does anything that is outside of the box -- small mirrorless (Q), larger mirrorless (k-01), really small penta prism (K-S1) -- they get nearly universally reviled on the forum for not releasing more of the same generic SLRs that they have for years. There is nothing wrong with a camera company trying to push the envelope a little, but it seems like even the idea of any color for cameras other than black is rejected by the Forum faithful.

I want Pentax to keep trying. I want them to try another large sensor mirrorless. I want to see them continue to work on the Q system. Basically, I want to see them release cameras that broaden the appeal of the brand and don't just release products just targeted at me. Some of them may not sell well, others will, but there needs to be more than just a full frame SLR in the works, or Pentax will eventually die as a brand.

I find it interesting that many photographers - and photography is supposed to be a somewhat creative endeavor, isn't it? - are so conservative and unimaginative when it comes to photography equipment.

The TCSTV guys seem to be pretty cool, and they do bring some Internet-forum style drama to their video clips. "R-E-L-A-X" - Aaron Rodgers

No. Actually, they kind of gushed over the K-01. Here's the review:

Me too like the fact that Pentax releases products that have to be different from other brands. You are correct, almost everyone of the recent products, WG, GR, MX-1, Q, 645z, K-5/3, KS-1, K-01 etc. (except may be the Q-s1 (more Leica like model which is not bad). The worst thing that would happen if Pentax releases clone like the plastic wonders of Canikon DLSR models wrapped with Ricoh logo, that would be the end of it.....

There's some video of theirs where they discuss what Canon & Nikon must do to remain relevant, and during the conversation Jordan makes an offhanded comment that the K-01 is garbage.

Actually, one of them (Chris) did say the "K-01 is an absolute piece of garbage" in a follow-up review. There was quite an argument here in August and September about that video clip, to the point that the REVIEWER from TCS actually joined the Forum and posted on the thread.

Who are they? I've never heard of them.
Same guys that gave K3 the best camera award last year. They aren't Pentax haters. They just don't "get" this camera's niche, and sales people hate things they can't sell.

But I don't understand the hate for the K-S1 -- from them or anywhere else. The LEDs are very functional, the size and form and colors are targeted to a specific non-American audience. Non-Canadian, either.

I'm thrilled to see Pentax trying something different. Maybe it fails. Maybe Ricoh laughs all the way to the bank. I hope they have a best seller and have more cash to invest back into Pentax.

Other way around - Jordan was suggesting a legacy-mount mirrorless would be useful for video, and Chris said flat-out that the K-01 was an "absolute piece of garbage". He even defended the position in a thread in the K-01 forum.

I like the TCSTV guys, but when alcohol is involved, I wish they'd just forget Pentax exists.

I'm still interested in the K-S1, waiting for it to drop low enough to fit my budget, and the price is falling.
As of this post, black body only sold by Amazon for $475.

In some perverse way this kind of thing makes me want to buy this camera - which I don't need - just to be contrary.

Sort of like my K-01, which for some applications is my preferred camera.

(16Mp - 20Mp - 24Mp -- Hhmmmmmm).

Spite-buying has gotten me excellent results. That was one of the driving forces behind my (first) K-01, and it turned out extremely well - for me (I can't speak for others, as I've never been anybody else ).

They also gushed about the K-3 and 645z and 645d. The camerastoretv had the 645z at second place for camera of the year. Because they are Pentax haters and all. I love how people jump to conclusions without watching the video.

The K-01 kind of numbed me to the criticism of the forum. Many people trashed it, I bought it because it was like getting a free 40XS, and I've taken it along as a back up body on a couple trips, and now have taken over 7000 exposures with it. I think it's a plan, trash something a little different, discourage people from buying it, buy it when Pentax can't sell them and get it for cheap. It's not good for Pentax, but ti might be good for someone's wallet, it was for mine. Especially when one of our K5's needed repair and I didn't have to buy another body. I just used the K-01 until my K-5 came back. For everything! And it wasn't half bad. Will wonders never cease?
