K-S1 price drops

Amazon UK has a black body-only for £399 now, while Jessops has it at £329 with kit lens (after £40 rebate). A couple of other sites appear also to have reduced their prices. Perhaps a sign of things to come? I hope these are permanent reductions and not just undeclared sale prices.

Those seem more in line with the sale prices we've been seeing in the US lately. Of course many of our sale prices end tonight

OK that must have been a typo by someone at Jessops. It's now showing at £429, which is in line with everyone else.

I have had my old and reliable K100D for about 6 years now and I have been looking for a used K5 IIs to replace it.

But at last week I noticed K-S1 discounted at 299€ for the kit here in Finland, I didn't have to think twice.

Thanks clackers. I'll be getting familiar with the S1 at the weekend.

The K-S1 body is selling for the equivalent of just over 300 pounds here in Chengdu China, with a non-wr lens it's about 360. So for me it is a no brainer, I am semi-retired now, and somewhat lazy, so instead of buying the K-3 that was in my plans for sometime in the future, I grabbed a black K-S1 body. Saves me about 200 pounds, and about 200gms. Check this out:

Less than a kilogram, with 3 nice primes - 21, 40, 70. It replaces my old K-5, and I like the results I get from it, as you can see from some of the other shots on my flickr page. If I buy a second K-S1 later in a different colour, or maybe even a K-S2, I would sometimes be able to realise my dream of carrying 2 bodies, with the 21 and my 100WR macro already mounted. And still be under 2 kg.

Congratulations! This is the ideal use for the K-S1 and the reason it should be taken more seriously by Pentaxians. I've been using a similar set with my K-01 for the last couple of years, and it means that I don't hesitate to bring it with me wherever I go. With the K-S1, you get that as well as the best APS-C viewfinder on the market. There is almost no IQ compromise with this set up - you just lose a control wheel. A bigger grip and WR wouldn't be useful with these lenses anyway.

Hmmm - I'm not so sure I'm happy you pointed this out. I once tried carrying 2 cameras of significantly different weight and controls and got so frustrated that I haven't done it since. While I had been eyeing with interest the drop in prices to the K-S1, I decided that I really didn't need another camera, just because I find the camera fun to shoot and the colors are nifty. I had a vague thought that I might at some later date replace the K3 with the K-S2, to save the weight but still leave me with WR, but I wasn't in any rush to do anything. Now you brought up a very good reason for me to get either another K-S1 or a K-S2. I do miss shooting with 2 cameras - I used to do it often when I was shooting with the DS and K100, then when I had the K100 and K10. This is not helping my CBA!

I've said this before, but one of my biggest frustrations with Pentaxians' hostile response to the K-S1 is that in many ways, the K-S1 follows the philosophy of the DA Limited lenses - small size & great IQ at the expense of WR, some handling, and other features (like big apertures). You can argue consumer "plastic" build quality versus Limited "metal", but it's really a cosmetic difference. I've seen the plastic inside a self-dis-assembled DA 21 - the self-dis-assembly feature being an unfortunate side effect of making the lens so small.

If the weather is nice, my current day-trip kit is a K-S1 and one of: DA 15/21/35, with a K-01 and the other two Ltds in the bag, along with one "big" lens (Tamron 17-50, DA 18-135, or maybe a Samyang MF lens like the 10/2.8). The K-S1 handles outside work where the 20MP sensor shines and a viewfinder is best, and the K-01 gets the inside work where the 16MP is less noisy in low light and the quiet shutter is desirable.

Perhaps we can lay much of the blame of K-S1 "failure" on the NFMsNFA crowd, the vast majority who never even touched the camera.

Hasn't dropped far enough to interest me. My wife's birthday is in two weeks and I'd consider it as a gift, but only if under $400USD with the lens. I think she'd get a kick out of it because it's so cute.

Totally agree with you on this. I mainly pair the K-S1 with the 40mm xs. With that set up and a small wrist trap you can actually fit it in a pocket. OK - a fairly big pocket and it's a bit bulgy, but so easy to do and you can take it everywhere. A couple of limiteds in another pocket and it's all good.
