What is the bulge on KS-1 and KS-2?

Where the SR logo is on the inside of the grip, I noticed there is a part that bulges outward a little on both of these cameras. Is there a reason for this? I notice the K7, K5, K5ii and K3 have a similar bulge, but higher up. Anyone know why?

I think it covers part of the aperture lever mechanism or the mirror motor. On previous DSLRs, the main body was as thick as the front of the "bulge", but it's cut back on the K-S1 (and K-S2, I guess - the K-S2 seems to have shifted some mass from the front to the rear).
