Using fast 50mm lens for water polo photography

Hi Guys

I plan to buy a K-S2 and would like to try using a small (50mm) lens like the Pentax DA 50 F1.8 to take photos at indoor Water polo games from poolside (about 10-15m).

The lighting in most pools is terrible so i figure a big aperture's the way to go. What do you think ?

Cheers
Chig

this lens is a good choice, cheap, fast, sharp and good in low light, you won't go wrong with it ^^

If you want to get a larger "slice of the action" the depth of field with a 50mm lens at or near wide open will be too shallow (and the FL may be too long). And you will likely not have a long enough focal length to isolate the action. I suggest a zoom lens and a smaller aperture than you are thinking. I doubt if it will be that dark. I don't do this particular event but I would guess a 35 to 135 mm range would be a reasonable starting point. Also I would not try to totally stop the motion, especially as the feeling of water waves/spray may look odd if totally frozen.

I have seen a f2.8 70-200mm being suggested for this type of shot. Beware the lens tend to be heavy. Also you will probably need good ISO performance for the speed and aperture.
