K-S1 at top of a Japan Sales chart!

Now that the K-S1's price has come down, it seems to be selling well in Japan, at least through the online sellers surveyed by the price comparison site kakaku.com. This ranking is for all ILC cameras, including DSLRs and mirrorless, and the kit which is doing well is the double lens kit with the DAL 55-300. It's hard to argue with that for value at less than $400 now. The single lens kit is at #68 and the body-only kit is #120, which is nowhere near as good, but actually not too bad for a Pentax, considering this list includes a separate entry for every kit of every type of mirrorless and DSLR camera.

On this ranking new entry-level cameras typically do badly for several months and then move up the ranking as their price comes down. You'll note that the K-S2 is still very expensive in Japan, so it is nowhere to be seen yet. The number of sellers that still have stock of the K-50 has dropped, so it is also much lower in the rankings now, but even so I don't remember any kit of that camera reaching the number one spot.

(ranking will change if viewed later)

So, someone's buying K-S1s. I hope they are new to Pentax and are having good experiences. It looks like they are because user reviews show all 5-star ratings so far.

Not bad for what the doomsayers here call a "commercial failure".

It's a brilliant little camera. I think I prefer it in use to the K-S2.

I like the subtle grip and the thumb pad. I prefer the button layout and the mode wheel at the back.
It's noticeably smaller, quite a bit lighter, and in my opinion it's far more stylish (at least on Moon Silver!).
Although the flippy screen of the K-S2 is useful, it's not a game changer. WiFi/NFC is a non-issue as I have a K-3 with FluCard if I need that functionality.

That's awesome, and also an awesome deal: two lenses plus the body for $360. That's what the body only costs in the US!

I just bought one for my daughter for 230. Roberts camera has e bay auctions. Can't really beat it for a starting camera, considering you would pay 150 for a used kx.

I could see the lights and colors being "cool" among young people and (now) affordable.

I never understood the dislike this camera gets. It's small & has focus peaking - perfect package for a casual 1 (2, 3, ...) prime stroll. If it was this cheap in Europe I'd go for it.

Amazon UK has them for £350 with the kit lens, if that's any use to you.

Thanks for the info. Yet that's 540 dollars minus 55-300. Not quite there.

In Germany you can get a white K-S1 with kit lens and flu card for about 300€ . Not hat bad.
Price will drop further I think.
