Pentax K-S2 compatibility with lenses

It just will not take a photo with my Pentax M 85 f2 lens - whether setting the camera to MF or setting it to AF to use catch in focus. Either way, it just won t take a picture. (And live view doesn t make a difference either.) The M 85 works fine on my K5ii though, whether it AF (only takes the photo if in focus), or in MF(takes the photo whether in focus or not), or in live view (whether in focus or not). My Sigma 28mm manual lens works with the K-S2, but the M 85mm doesn't.

On top of that, when I half-press the shutter button, it starts a strange whirring sound, which continues for a couple of seconds before stopping - regardless of whether you fully press the shutter or not.

The whirring sound is shake reduction.

For your other issue, read thoroughly: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/58-troubleshooting-beginner-help/110658-u...x-dslrs-f.html

:-D

For additional clarification - the problem is probably that you need to enable the use of the (manual) aperture ring, on the very last page of the menu (#28). Also look at option #17, to release shutter even if there is no focus confirmation.

EDIT: Also, 1,000 posts for me! Yahoo!

The Pentax K-S2 should work with the Pentax-M 85mm. Here is a photo on flickr with this camera/lens combination.

Regardless of the details about how to get the best from an M lens, if you have the camera set to manual focus, it should take a photo whether it is in focus or not etc.

Severalsnakes, are you sure the whirring is the shake reduction? My K5 is silent when I half press the shutter (if using manual focus).

CORRECTION:

Sorry - Sevveralsnakes was right, and I was wrong (about the compatability).

This is the key point:
First, if your camera won't fire, set "Allow aperture setting other than A" to 2 (allowed) in the custom function menu.

I guess I changed this in the menu on my camera so long ago that I forgot I had, and forgot you had to. That should solve the problem.

Still not sure about the whirring though.

Britta, have you tried turning the shake reduction off? If that is the noise, then presumably if you turn it off, it shouldn't make a noise. If it does still whir, presumably it is something else.

Anyone else have a K-S2?

I moved from the K-30 to the K-S2 in March of this year. The SR in the K-S2 is just, simply, louder. :-o Several others with the K-S2 have noticed the same thing. (Check out https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184-pentax-k-s1-k-s2/291482-my-k-s2-has-arrived.html and https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/184-pentax-k-s1-k-s2/291490-post-your-k-s2-shots-here.html .)
