Well in my experience it’s a progressive thing:

1 – if one as good enough light it’s possible to get hig iso photos with small / acceptable noise – not clean, but controllable…

2 – noise is (as everything else) much a question of perception;

3 – development software is important – I myself do 95% of my development exclusively in Adobe Camera Raw – so I tried to learn to use it to the detail; doing so specially with the noise reduction and sharpening tools is a must;

4 – after Nik Collection become free last year, I begun to use it a lot and I have had batches of photos (sometimes a full day of shooting) developed up to the end using Nik Collection;

5 – black and white photos are more permissive to presence of noise than color ones, meaning for the same amount of noise black and white photos “look better” (see point 2 – above);

6 – in the case of my last posted photo, it was processed first in ACR with a small correction of exposure (+0,65) than passed via Photoshop to Nik Collection, first applying Dfine 2 for noise reduction (automating setting), than applying Silver Effex Pro 2 for black and white conversion.

Best regards,

A pretty straightforward workflow. I used Nik for awhile but don;t think I've given it a fair shot yet. I'll probably take another look now with the nice results you got on the B&W. Thanks for that DDHarriman

You are welcome

One source of inspiration I advise to check slowly and as much times as needed (I myself come back to some of them from time to time and up to now keep on discovering new things…), is the Nik Collection you tube lessons and webinars, who are free and can be found in Nik Collection by Google - YouTube.

Best regards,

Nice capture, but this thread is for KS2 portraits.

EDIT: OOOPS! I misread and thought that was a K3 shot. I should have realized that as good as this one is it must have been taken with a KS2.

Portrait wise (at least) the K-S2 proves to be an excellent camera, as the examples posted here show, thus should not be discarded when considering upgrading / getting a new camera (if one can still find one to be bought of course).

Note: I myself think that nowadays, as with cars, there are no bad cameras, just good cameras and extraordinary good cameras...
