I use the 12-24 much more on account of the rectilinear reproduction, and the 10-17 being more novelty/creative.
That's the way I view them, so I voted for the 12-24. It's a lens that can be used for in a lot of different situations, whereas the 10-17 is more of a "gimmick" lens.

ONe of the great things about the 10-17mm is its close focuing capabilities. I have, at a pinch, used it for macro work, knowing my subject being in the centre will not suffer all that much distortion. I toured vietnam with this being the only lens and was very pleased with its versatility.

+1 The 12-24 is great everywhere and superb for architectural and indoors. The 10-17 is more like a trick lens on which some pics will actually benefit, but not as widely usable as the DA 12-24.

Interesting perspective! It actually looks more natural to your eyes. I hadn't thought of that, but in some ways it does.

I've got the 10-17FE and considered the 12-24 (I missed it when it was 'reasonably priced' by about a week, then it jumped a huge amount). For me, if you want an extreme wide-angle you should go for the widest available. As I'm mostly interested in using it in enclosed/cramped spaces I prefer the fish-eye (you get perspective distortion between foreground/background anyway from a non-FE in this situation) the FE distortion appears more natural to my eyes.
With a rectilinear wideangle you get the "conehead" distortion if you put faces near the corners. That's not pretty. With a fisheye you get "rubber body" distortion if you put people along the edges. Faces in corners look allright on a fisheye though.
