If there's any lens in this contest than can truly claim to be the Greatest Pentax Lens of All Time, it's the Takumar 50mm/1.4. This is a lens that Canon and Sony full-frame users dream of owning and fight over in auctions. It's a lens that you can use on any Pentax film or digital SLR made since 1964 with equally beautiful results. And it's a lens that will continue to create great photographs on any APS-C or full-frame DSLR that Pentax releases in the foreseeable future. Out there in the wider photographic world, it's generally accepted that the only series of lenses that can beat the Takumars are made by a company that begins with L and ends with eica.

Just think about it: the space race, the Vietnam war, the civil rights movement--this lens was there and it photographed them all. If you use a Takumar 50mm, you are in possession of a piece of living history that several others before you will have used to capture their own unique visions of the world. You don't own this lens; you merely take temporary guardianship over it, until one day it will pass on into other hands.

This competition is not about which of the current range of lenses you'd like to win in the giveaway. It's about the Greatest Pentax Lens of All Time. It's about the Takumar 50mm/1.4.

Compared to the more practical A the Super Takumar got a head when it simply comes to feel. Just looking at it and holding it makes your knees shiver of joy. The design wasn't discontinued for optical reasons, it was purely a production thing with the glass types used.

I prefer the rendering of the Super Tak. The coating change made the A more efficient but it changed the final product.

Plus . . . . . Takumar!

No matter how you slice it the the ST 50/1.4 will have a special character and appeal, in both rendering and feel, that no 'modern' 50mm offers. Even back in the day, when shootin' with it you just knew it was special even though we didn't have much to compare it with then.

It's a true Classic - ought'a retire its jersey an' declare a worldwide annual holiday in its honor.

The f/1.4 design is timeless and endures. That's my vote!

The outcome of this would yet again jack up the price of these old lenses.
