Lens Tournament: FA 77mm F1.8 Limited vs DA* 300mm F4

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the knockout round of the Greatest Pentax Lens Tournament! The rules are simple: Two lenses enter. You must choose one. The winner moves on; the loser is gone. Check out the bracket here, which is based on the user nomination results.

This is a semi-final match. The contenders are the FA 77mm F1.8 Limited and the DA* 300mm F4.

Make your choice by voting in the poll above. You will need to log in or register if you don't yet have a forum account.
Feel free to argue, persuade, and generally carry on after that. Voting will be open for exactly 24 hours.

The Final Four begins! I'm rooting for the 77 avenging the 43 (and the 35, too, for the love of retractable hoods) in the final round against the 31.

I'm going for the Da* 300.
The images from it are insane good.
And paired with the new TC shines the lens even more.
It also covers the FF.
The best lens

Can't vote against the FA 77. Before the match ups, I would have picked the FA 200 macro to win it all, but my guess now would be the FA 77.

I love my 77mm. I found one extra use for it yesterday-- it's a great focal length for taking pictures out the airplane window!

OMG, FA 77ltd vs DA*300?! It's like asking whether I'd prefer to lose my thumb or index finger* I can't vote against either.

* My take on that choice: as long as I can keep my middle finger, I'm good ;~)

Comparing apples and oranges here IMHO ... I will vote for my dear 77, but I am sure that the DA*300 is great ... Would love to have both

DA* 300 is my best lens - and I have (too) many lenses. I don't have the FA 77 limited, but have the DA 70 limited which is said to be a somewhat equivalent, if more balanced and very slightly slower version of it. The DA *300 beats it everywhere, from depth of field, magnification and possibility of close-ups, to the interestingness of the photos.

Here a couple examples with what my DA*300 could do:

I bought the DA 70 after the FA 77. I love both. They are not equivalent. The FA 77 is sharper and it has better colors. It has a different rendring.

It has to be the FA77 for me. It is absolutely the jewel in the Pentax crown.
Man, I love the DA*300 though!

The DA*300 is indeed a better lens than the DA70, but that is not the competition here. The FA77 is in no way equivalent to its little brother. I did have them both for a while, and there is a reason that is no longer the case.

Go FA 77/1.8!

Other brands have excellent telephoto lenses as well but the FA 77/1.8 is a unique gem that truly embodies the Pentax spirit: Small, beautiful, and optically brilliant.
