I don't think this is the right way to run a competition like this and here is a few ways I feel it can be better.
Firstly Remove the Stupid page showing how many post each person has and who is the leader. Even I started out trying to just give quality responses and informative news and reviews and beautiful photos. The the moment you look at that page the competitive side comes out in everyone and they must try and post more. If this sheet was hidden then that problem will be solved. You just don't know if your leading or not.
Secondly I would do something like saying every 50th post on the website gets +3-5 entries to the competition to add a bit of randomness to it. I would release the final standings only maybe at the end or release it one week at a time.
I also think likes should maybe count more and maybe be in the form of 5 likes gets you one entry. That way making it a bit wider to the whole Pentax community.
It did get me to start posting a bit more so cant say that it did not work as intended...;-)
Thanks Adam.
It was a long day and night, and I do appreciate the quality of your submissions, and respectful, constructive responses, Personally, I am viewing the time, thought, and creativity I am attempting to put into this competition as trying to earn a lens, rather than win one. I have tried to continually raise the bar, for myself and now only post current work, so shooting every day, in areas outside my normal working field and comfort zone has been part of the process and been a reward in itself......I am not sure not having a leader board would make things any different in the end as far as quality or amount of posts or changing the competiveness aspect of it...It might add a more random element, but it also might lead people to posting even more, as at least now knowing you are probably in or out of the top ten at some point helps in the decision as to when enough is enough....Again from my point of view, I have enjoyed the process itself, the interaction, the inspiration, the ideas and the photographic perspectives......In the end, even if I manage to be the leader, it doesn't mean I will be fortunate enough to win one of the grand prizes, but I do feel it is has been a worthwhile experience simply from diving into the process after utilizing this forum for so long simply as a resource, rather than as what it is meant to be......a forum.
P.S. I know you didnt like my Neon Photograph much on the aesthetic level, but that shot was inspired by RamseyBuckeyes top level Neon thread, which put me on a two hour drive with my son hunting and searching for the only neon on our small island.....In the end we found three pieces...and had a great adventure together in the process....the night before I played with the full moon light and slow exposure with live models and a moonlit sea....for me, this kind of summarizes the competition for me and why I view the process as a positive one whatever the daily or final outcome might be....
