My goal, or vision if you will, as a photographer just starting out in the portrait business is this: capture the essence, the spirit, the beauty of the subject. A lofty goal but how to accomplish it? So far this is the only trick I know to even getting close - get to know the subject. I shot a baby this week, and the first thing I did was get down on her level, and talked to her, watched her, let her watch me and decide what she thought about me...for about five minutes, I talked to the mom and got her hopes for the session while I got to know the baby. By the time I starting clicking, I knew the sparkle in her eyes and the thoughtful look on her face that I wanted to capture.
(this picture is one of my favorites from the session)
