I sent mine to Precision in May of 2015. They cleaned, adjusted and replaced a pc board and a motor.

It's been 'perfect' so far...but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. (And I've subscribed to UncleVanya's thread just in case.)

Get used to fixing, refixing, and fixing again, and again.

I am waiting til next month to send my DA* 16-50 in for the Third Time. Third. That will be Four motors. The 50-135 works. The 60-250 works.
The 16-50 works for 9 months to a year, then craters. I even bought a back-up Tamron 17-50 f:/2.8. So far the Tamron gets more use than the Pentax Star lens.
This is the only piece of Pentax gear I have had trouble with. But I have had more than my share with this little rascal.
Frankly it does not deserve the Star. Neither Pentax, Nor Hoya-Pentax, Nor Ricoh-Pentax can make this thing work. All three should be red-faced about this.

Ouch!

If you think it's cursed, you should do the screwdrive conversion and be done with it. Costs nothing.

The recent replacement motors are meant to be okay, though.

For what it's worth, I had mine converted to screw drive and it works great now (fast too) ... end of story !

Should and do are two different things.

With the 3 service sheets I have for the times my 16-50 was at Precision, it never detailed those things too well. More of a general synopsis. Though the first one did have a bit more detail than the latter two (going as far as to say they replaced the SDM, polished the lens, and calibrated it). But the SDM thereafter made this squeeky yet clanky/loose sound. Definitely not right and I suspected it would have failed soon had they not mercifully replaced the entire lens on the final trip.

On the second one, the only way I knew they actually did anything to the lens was the rear mount plate was shiny new with no wear marks. It would be nice if they itemized parts and prices (esp when out of warranty). Then again I think it would be even nicer if Ricoh Imaging just stopped using Precision in the US and took work in house.
