A place for vintage camera repairs in the Minnesota Twin Cities metro

As I didn't see it listed I figured I would off up Allied Camera Repair in Stillwater, MN. Not an authorized repair shop and given the age of the cameras repaired most parts are sourced from donor cameras.

Carl only services old film SLRs that are mostly all manual cameras but also does some early automatic aperture ones. He is available by appointment only and is not around in the winter.

I used him this year for bringing my Spotmatic F back up to spec including a full CLA, new light seals, light meter calibration for the 1.5v battery, and a repair of my SMC 28mm lens where the diaphragm blades weren't functioning properly (they would only stop down half way at best). Paid $130 for the work which was done in about a week (I think it was 8 or 9 days total).

I reside in the US and don't yet have a Pentax digital camera: all my Pentax cameras use film and one of them I have had repaired by the highly regarded Eric Hendrickson. I shall certainly use his services again if he is still in business.

However, sooner or later I shall want to get a Pentax digital camera, either used or new. I don't think Eric repairs or maintains digital cameras. So I have a few questions so I can plan ahead for future repairs:

- If I buy a new Pentax camera and it has problems within the warranty period, am I required to send it to a repair shop authorised by Pentax? (There seems only to be only one, Precision Camera, here in the US and unless I am mistaken they have not got a good reputation in this forum.)

- If I buy a new Pentax camera and it has problems within the warranty period that are unacceptable to me (e.g. too many, low overall quality of manufacture, etc.) what recourse do I have with the seller of the camera to either get my money refunded or to be given a replacement camera?

- If I buy a used Pentax camera I assume that any unexpired warranty transfers to me, the new owner. Is that correct? What evidence of warranty should I ask the seller of the camera to provide me?

- What evidence of the warranty would I have to provide to the authorised repair shop? Is the serial number itself sufficient evidence?

- If I get a used camera for which the warranty has expired, are there any considerations that I should think about when selecting a repair shop? (I assume I can use whichever repair shop I wish.)

Thanks in advance for any advice in response to these questions.

Pentaxis,

Based on my experience of 30 plus years of shooting Pentax (2 film, 3 digital) I have only had 1 issue with a Pentax product the DA* 50-135. The local place I had used for years couldn't get parts, they sent it to Precision who had to send it back to the factory to replace the af motor on it. That is my only knock on Pentax is the lack of a wide spread support network. And based on my experience with the K-1 since it first hit the market go ahead and get your feet wet

-Precision is the authorized repair facility, so that's where you'd get your repairs free of charge during the warranty period. You can get it fixed anywhere else at cost, but Precision should do a good job most of the time.
-Return or exchange the camera based on the retailer's return policy. B&H and Adorama give you 30 days and are very generous, as is Amazon, so you'll be in good hands.
-Warranty is non-transferable
-The original sales receipt from an authorized dealer, bearing your name (the name of the person requesting the repair)
-It depends on the nature of the issue, but for modern gear Precision offers the widest range of services. You can of course contact all of the places listed in this sticky to see if they can help you and charge less.

BTW, if you do get a new camera, I strongly recommend the extended warranty option:
Pentax Extended Warranty ENTWARRANTY-ENTRYMIDILC B&H Photo Video (<$1000)
Pentax Extended Warranty for Advanced ADVWARRANTY-ADVILC B&H (>= $1000, including the K-1)

You can also add a third-party warranty instead, if you want to have incidental coverage. Note that the Pentax warranty does not cover water damage for any reason.

This is not an authorised repair facility but they did un-jam the AF of my DA 40mm limited very effectively and at a reasonable price a year ago. It's a small place hidden away in central Madrid, Spain.

They have quite a long waiting list which I take to indicate that they are in demand and therefore good.

Thank you for info on this Repair Service....Right up front they warn that the repairs may cost more then
the camera is worth, along with pre estimated prices for different types of cams...
I like the fact that they are right up front with much info even before you send in the form for a
free estimate...

Harrow Technical of London is closing down

Hi Adam,

Just an update to the list. I have currently two MXs CLAed with Harrow Technical in London. I was informed by the owner Robin Gowing that he is retireing at the end of March and only takes cameras to repair until end of February.

Their website confirms this.

Pentax Camera Repair Specialists - Harrow Technical

I think he is as big name in Pentax repair here in the UK as Eric is in the States, so he deserves a mention.

Regards,
Zsolt

Does this mean RIC has their own repair center now, or are they just acting as a middleman for Sun?

@SharkyCA

Nevermind, I see they just include the address of Sun Camera. I've added the link for reference rather than as a separate entity.
