Fixing a flash foot?

Has anyone had their flash shoe replaced for a reasonable cost? I have two AF 540FGZ flashes with broken toes. KEH offers a flat $150 fee for all flash work. Who beats that?

At that price, my mind turns to kludging an off camera cord to the flash.

Yes, but you'd still have to hold it in place somehow. I used the hot shoe- that's why the foot finally fell off.

To my mind, the hot shoe/flash interface is the most underengineered hardware in modern cameras. I know, you don't want the flash torquing the top plate of the camera body. Or do you, since many flashes cost more than many cameras?

You ought to be able to find used AF540FGZs for near that price.

I was thinking of epoxy and make some sort of brace/butress to permanently attach the cord. I think though that I may have misunderstood what and where is broken.

the foot itself is available on eBay as a replacement part. I bought a couple of them for relatively cheap.
