Buying from Amazon and getting a valid warranty

Here is Ricoh's position on buying from Amazon and securing a valid US warranty:

QuoteQuote:
Thank you for contacting RICOH.

Amazon.com is an authorized RICOH dealer if the camera is shipped from them. Amazon also uses a network of independent dealers who may not be authorized. If you are going to purchase from Amazon.com make sure the camera is coming from them and not a third-party. Their website will show who is fulfilling the order.

If you are in need of further assistance, please respond to this email or call our technical support center at 800-877-0155.

Sincerely,
Randall S.

Amazon can be confusing. Sometimes they sell and ship Pentax, sometimes they aren't the seller, but are the shipper, and sometimes they are not the seller and not the shipper. The first two would qualify for the warranty. And note that the questions about warranties and such you see on Amazon can be confusing as they relate to warranty and sellers because Amazon concatenates those questions by product, not by seller.

Interesting, I figured the warranty was only when Amazon was the seller.

So in a nutshell, look for "shipped and sold by Amazon" or "fulfilled by Amazon".

I think the first one only? You want "sold and shipped", i.e. Amazon is the dealer. If they are just the shipper for someone else, not sure if that counts (even though the Ricoh email kind of says so by saying "if it is shipped from them", I don't think that is what they actually literally mean). You want Pentax stock that Amazon itself acquired from Ricoh.

If Amazon fulfills the order (and you paid a "normal" price) you should get warranty too. Ricoh is ultimately pretty lenient about this- it's an question I brought up with them a few times.

Remember that customer service isn't the bible- they were completely wrong about the K-1 extended warranty, after all

They were? I missed the update. Where is that thread?

On topic: I bought my K-50 with 18-135 from a Canadian company sold through Amazon and fulfilled by Amazon. I had zero difficulty getting service with Precision around the time they took over the business of servicing Pentax. I did have trouble with Precision's communication and customer service but nothing that was related to the place I purchased from.
