The basic problem is that the aperture is closed down to the lens's smallest opening regardless of what the body called for.
Assume the lens's smallest opening is f/22.
If the body calls for f/4, it will get f/22.
If the body calls for f/8, it will get f/22.
If the body calls for f/16, it will get f/22.
Thus you get better results "at larger apertures" because the value called for is more distant from what it actually gets

The solenoid controls limiting the amount of closedown, not causing the closedown, so it has nothing to do during 'green button' metering..
