HELP!!! 80-200mm Unfixable!?!?,

I recently received word from Precision Camera Repair that my FA* 80-200 f2.8 cannot be repaired! It seems that the lens made it all the way to Japan for repair and they said "lens is no longer serviceable." It doesn't auto focus properly. Any ideas on what I should do? It seems as though I am finished and that I have a giant paper weight!

I think you need a little more info from Precision... Is the return of your lens unrepaired because the facility in Japan no longer services this model (it is, after all, quite a few years out of production), or because the specific issue with it is considered unrepairable? If it's the former, I'm sure there are other service facilities who could sort it out for you. If the latter, it would be good if they could tell you why it's unrepairable, as you may still find someone who can carry out a repair of sorts...

See if you can get a more precise answer as to why it cannot be repaired. Possibly parts are no longer available from stock. Which is not always the end because while a factory technician without parts cannot help, sometimes a private repair shop can do non-standard repairs or even fashion a needed part.

Find out what is wrong if possible, then send it to a private shop like Eric or maybe @dcshooter can help.

It really matters what is damaged. Even damaged circuit boards may be salvaged. Damaged elements are a huge issue as well as some structural parts. Enterprising folks can possible fabricate or repair many parts.

It seems that the facility in Japan no longer services this model. Or, at least that is most consistent with what I was told. But did they really need to send it to Japan to get that answer? They couldn't have received that answer over the phone?

Also, do any of you know of any other Pentax repair specialists?

He might not be able to help as it is an auto-focus lens...

KEH might be able to do something...

If you do end up with a 'giant paperweight', I'd be quite happy to feature it off your hands. I've got some 'papers' that might need holding down, and I'd even happily pay shipping! I can't promise that I won't go out and treat it as a manual focus fast zoom though... 😉

That's an older lens, discontinued 13 years ago. They likely don't have parts and probably haven't in many years.
