Lens repairs in the U.K.: Cameratiks in Edinburgh

A little while ago, I sold a Pentax F50 1.7 on eBay, but it was returned to me due to a slow aperture. I didn't notice the fault at the time, so I presume some lubricant escaped during shipping onto the aperture blades. Either way, I decided to get the lens fixed, and got several quotes from various repair shops in the U.K., most of them would not have been economical. The only place that offered a price that was less than what the lens was worth was Edinburgh-based Cameratiks. The price quoted was 26+VAT.

A few years ago I had a Carl Zeiss Jena Flektogon 35mm with a tiny amount of fungus cleaned at Cameratiks before, and the price was reasonable. So I was happy to use their service again when I was up in Edinburgh. Less than a week later, I received a call and the lens was shipped back to me for a reasonable fee. All in all, I can highly recommend their service, and it might be a good call for anyone who needs a lens serviced in the UK, particularly if other places offer quotes way beyond what the lens is worth.

Thanks for posting this; it's very useful to know!

I'm becoming fairly confident with servicing old Russian lenses, but even the more involved ones are (as I understand it) pretty simple compared to more modern big-name AF lenses. I wouldn't know where to start on something like the F50 1.7 (I don't own that one, but I do have plenty of Pentax AF glass), and I'm not sure I even want to delve into all that. So, this is a great contact to have.

Thanks again!

I had a CLA done on an SP1000 at Cameratiks, it cost me 60. A couple of years later, after not much use, the meter was all over the place and the shutter was capping. It's not a place I would recommend at all, which is a shame as it's the only photography repair place I'm aware of in Edinburgh. Perhaps they're better with lenses than they are with cameras.
