Glad to hear that you now have a working copy of this fine lens. Sorry to hear about your heart attack but it is good to know you are recovering and able to enjoy your camera equipment in the outdoors. Good luck with your shooting and keep us posted.

Problem with 150-450mm lens total separation

Mods, please move if there is a more appropriate place
Thank you

__________

Currently in Tanzania on Safari

Yesterday, the 150 -450 separated and I could remove the part containing the optics

Damage caused by ? Bumpy road ? but it doesn't matter now

Will continue with other lenses including 55-300 PLM and I do have a 1.4 rear converter with me as well

Remember similar thread but cannot find now

Thoughts, suggestions welcome

Will be back in US 8/4

What separated? The mount from the lens? Not really giving us any clue what you're talking about. Maybe post a photo?

This has happened before. Check this thread out.

DFA 150-450mm needs repair - PentaxForums.com

As you will read, it also happened to me. Basically it was about $1000 to fix it. I did it, still use it, never had the problem again. It's still a favorite lens of mine. Why did it happen? Don't know. Wish my lens was under warranty at the time but it wasn't. Ha! Happened to me on Safari in Tanzania as well.

Cannot upload photos now

As noted in this thread, my 150-450 separated into two pieces, the one with all the optics

Which fits inside the rear portion of the lens made up with the controls and the tripod mount separated from the rear part of the lens

Update time:

pres589, in another thread, mentioned a camera repair shop here in Topeka KS - Camera Repair - phototronic.biz

Mike said he was willing to take a look at it although he had never seen a lens separate like my D FA 150- 450 did

so it is a waiting game and if he cannot help, I will decide whether to go with Precision-Camera

[ funny thing is that phototronics is right next door to where we board our dog for trips ]

wish me luck

positive thoughts are hereby solicited

just contacted my local repair guy

he believes that screws were stripped and that caused the problem

he believes he can fix that with retapping and over size screws

bent metal rod was detached, he will either straighten it or try to find replacement

then he needs to check the " mechanics " focusing etc

if all goes well

he believes it will cost me less than $400.

wish me luck

That would be fab. Not only for affordability, but you'd not be without your lens for months (given the history of repairs to the lens).

/fingers crossed

update on the repair of my D FA 150-450mm: by a local repair shop Phototronic

it is done, and at a cost of less than $300

he runs a one man shop opened only in the afternoon M-F and he is not, by his own admission, the world fastest

he advises you to keep calling him to check on the progress of the repair

he does Vintage to Digital Camera Repairs with free estimates [ he does not sell equipment ]

If you want to try him out, please call him first

Phototronic

took the lens out Saturday at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha

this is SOOC, no crop or pp

hand held, photographed through the mesh of the enclosure

other photos are scattered throughout the forums' threads

no problems at all

[ well to be honest, I had forgotten how heavy the lens is, manageable for me but it is certainly no light weight ]

I am so sorry to hear that! Pentax needs to realize they have an issue with this lens! I am happy to say that mine is being replaced by Pentax though. It has been two months getting to this point though. I am hoping to have it this coming week.

I would strongly suggest, if you go through Precision Camera, that you contact Steve Mongrain. He is Senior Customer Experience Manager. Email is Smongrain@precisioncamera.com. Phone is 860-272-2160. I spent over a month dealing with others and finally got a bit forceful and they connected me with Steve and things went much better.

Also, my lens was out of warranty as well. Please let me know how your experience goes.
Hello please HELP!!. Same thing happened to my lens it’s just come apart. Can anyone who got their lens repaired tell me how much they charged you? Was it out of warranty? Did they admit it was a design flaw and take care of the costs? Please help me lens is so expensive and I am out of warranty

you found the right thread but start reading my posts starting back in July of 2019:

the posts talk about my experience with my Pentax 150-450mm zoom when the screws stripped and the part containing the optics separated from the controls section

bottom line I suggest you call Phototronic in Topeka Kansas

he was able to help me with my problem

mine was out of warranty

the cost of repair was less than $300 [ but I didn't have to pay for any shipping ]

no contact was made with Pentax because it had no warranty and I bought it from a previous owner a couple of years before the problem arose
