Pentax spotmatic - unresponsive meter

I recently bought a Pentax Spotmatic and was disappointed to discover that my meter does not appear to be working. This could be because I have not bought the correct batteries. I have bought Camelion Alkaline 1.5v AG10 batteries which fit perfectly but could be the root of the unresponsive meter. Are there any other things I could try before trying to get it repaired? I'm sorry if this has been asked before. I'm new to both the forum and film cameras!

Spotmatics have a special circuit that makes them unaffected by batteries voltage changes. This is why we can still use them without any problem with 1,5V alkalines instead of original 1,35V mercury cells. I recently had 2x Pentax KM one (9/10 outside) with 3 steps underexposure and the second (9,8/10 outside) with not working meter. In both cases the problem was in circuit cables almost desintegrating in your hands. Old oxidized cables has high resistance - so they will probably need to be replaced
