Pentax Asahi KM Battery Compartment Malfunction

Hello,

A couple of days ago my brother bought a Pentax Asahi KM at a fleemarket for 5,-. We weren't certain if the camera would work, and so far we have yet to test it. However, we have tested the exposure meter, and this refuses to work. This is probably due to a flat battery, unfortunately we were not able to remove the battery without unscrewing the camera's bottom housing. After unscrewing said housing we were able to successfully remove the battery! Unfortunately we found out that the battery compartment isn't functioning properly. We removed the piece that holds the battery's contact leaf, as you can see on one of the photos. This piece is unfortunately quite damaged. We were wondering if anyone could tell us what the part is called and how to get a hold of it. We also checked the internet for a service manual for the KM, but without luck.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi,

You may as well look for the Spotmatic repair manual, as most of the KM is equal to the Spotmatc F, except for the K-mount.
From the pictures it seems that you should just reconnect the wire on the back of the battery holder. That is difficukt to solder while the lip is stainless steel. You can use conductive glue instead.
The Battery caps can get terribly locked on the bottom plate. Quite an adventure to open them and from your last picture it's obvious somebode tried it before you! First remove the bottom plate from the body before exercising brute force. You might use penetrating oil and leave it for a week. As the cap is damaged already you can pry in a screw driver.
You might consider th keep the cap stuck and remove the bottom plate to change batteries!

Success!

Wim
