First thing I noticed is this

$45.00 diagnostic fee will apply.

funny I was told no cost to obtain an estimate of repair, I would only be responsible for return shipping, which I had to prepay

doesn't make me want to trust them very much

would you ?

now need to decide if I want a used repaired lens or a brand new one with longer warranty

I have read that if you use the right credit card, you get an automatic extension of the 1 year warranty, does anyone know about that ??

just heard from the supervisor via phone

Supervisor: we don't charge diagnostic fees only return shipping

had her look at the email I received today

Supervisor: that is wrong, we don't and won't charge a diagnostic fee, only return shipping

me: not only does the paper work says " diagnostic fee " but first person I talked to today said I would be charged a diagnostic fee

Supervisor: I will get that language changed

me: thank you

they need to get their act together

lens in Japan awaiting my decision to ok repair or not

lenses are repaired in Japan, although not manufactured there

I have decided to go ahead and have Precision do the repairs

told it would be 5 -6 weeks minimum because it is in japan

so I expect it in 8 weeks, give or take a year or so ( just kidding I hope )

Sounds like this whole process with Precision is a pain. And here I was thinking of sending in my K-1 to Precision for sensor cleaning & general maintenance early next year. I'm not so sure now.

Last time I had that done, I took the camera to a local professionally-oriented camera shop. Cost me $35 and they did a great job. (McClanahan's in Warrenton, Virginia.)

I, too, support my local brick and mortar shop - Wolfe's Camera in Topeka

but unfortunately my problem was not within their scope

but for info and guidance, those folks know their stuff

My local one unfortunately doesn't do any repair or cleaning service. I think the closest one that's trustworthy is Wolfe's Camera.
Might take a drive.

Wolfe does offer a sensor cleaning service

DIGITAL SLR CAMERA SENSOR CLEANING
Keep your pictures looking their best with a camera sensor cleaning at Wolfe's! Over time, dust and other particles can stick to your camera's image sensor and show up as small dark spots in your pictures. For about the same cost as simply buying the cleaning supplies, Wolfe's can clean your camera's sensor and save you the time it takes to perform this delicate process.

Call us at 785-235-1386 for more info and to schedule a cleaning for your camera. For most cleanings, your camera is cleaned and back to you in 1-2 business days.

DSLR Sensor Cleaning

unfortunately the only Pentax cameras and lenses for sale are in the used equipment bin, I believe.

I haven't been in there since the Summer

My HD Pentax-D FA* 70-200mm F2.8 ED DC AW isn't working properly. it won't focus and there is a " grinding " sound I don't like at all

I bought it from a forum member and it has no warranty

looking for ideas on how to get an estimate on its repair and what it would cost just to get an estimate and where to send it. I live in Topeka Kansas

any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful

one other thing, apparently there are a couple of forum members who might be interested if I decide to part with the tripod foot for the lens, it reputably fits both this lens and the HD Pentax-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6 ED DC AW.

can anyone confirm that

anyone have an idea as to the fair market value for such an item?
I am interested in purchasing this foot if still available--thanks

For those folks who are looking, I will attempt to model this part and have it made by a machine shop, potentially with improvements to the original design. I have in mind standard ARCA mount and a lighter, yet still rigid build. Any other features that folks would like?

perhaps you might want to contact K6-III via PM

I sent my DFA 150-450 to Sun Camera in Canada. I fell into a pond with it, and there were some very dirty water drops that got into the vent, which evaporated and left marks a couple of elements in.

They got a hold of me yesterday with the same story. They can't do the repairs or even disassembly here, they don't have the tools to set up the lens. They want to send it to Japan. I gave the go ahead, and they suggested 6 weeks.

They did the K1 to Mark II upgrade, and I have had K3's serviced there as well with good results. There is something with the lenses where they upgrade the rom chip or something, and they are not set up here in Canada, and obviously the US.

Luckily I have another long lens to keep me occupied.

By the way, if you want good competent service people available to do the work, expect to pay them. Diagnosing a problem with a piece of hardware and pricing the fix is half the work.

agreed 100 %

my confusion was that Precision says no charge for estimate of cost of repair

and then I received paper work which erroneously indicated I was being charged for such a service

turns out there was no charge just bad wording on the info I got

no problem once that got cleared up
