has anyone deal with Square Trade add on warranty ( All State ) ?

I just got done chatting with some one at Square Trade regarding my aftermarket warranty and my problem with the K 3 ( mode dial not working )

at this time I have no idea what the exact problem is but my local repair guy thinks it is electronic not physical

I am informed that I must send the camera into them, they will provide it to an unknown repair facility and the estimated time to repair is 2 - 3 business days

I explained that Pentax does not sell parts to anyone except the authorized repair facility - Precision in Conneticutt

they wouldn't budge

any people deal with them

any thoughts

they are to have someone call me in 24 hours so I can discuss the matter further.

Seems like Square Trade ends up sending stuff back to the manufacturer for repair unless their initial inspection thinks it is not repairable. Not clear if they will send it to Precision or back to Japan. If the equipment can't be repaired they will give you money to buy a replacement.

I have an add on warranty with my K-70. Whoever does service in Canada "determined" that my recent failures were my fault and so there is no coverage other than I got an old Nikon D7000 as a loaner under the insurance. Repairs will be $400Cdn. D7000 is a terrible camera. And if anyone thinks Nikon's of that era had great autofocus they are sadly mistaken. It's simply terrible.

latest news

I'm to ship it to some unknown repair facility in New Jersey where I am told they either have plenty of Pentax parts or can get them without a problem

I am not confident

I hope I don't get some third party electronic part installed

If that's your feeling then send it to Precision and pay for it out of you pocket then see if Square Trade will reimburse you. Or you can take it to Small Claims court.

other wise there is no coverage

it has been delivered to Fed Ex

due to be delivered to their repair facility in New Jersey Thursday PM

we will wait and see

Don't worry about that. Pentax is rare enough that the criminal counterfeiters don't bother making knockoff Pentax products. If your camera's problem is something generic like a bad capacitor or internal connector, Ricoh likely buys those parts from elsewhere, rather than manufacture everything from scratch. The repair center can obtain generic parts from their usual sources.

Best of luck with the repair.

Mode dial problems are usually mechanical , worn or dirty/greasy contacts. The brush contacts on the dial can break or get out of alignment. If you look at the threads on DIY mode dial repair the parts are too specific per model for any third party to even bother with making. The parts typically consist of a flex board with the encoder contacts, brush contacts that attach to the dial, and the dial hardware.

And Ricoh sells parts business to business, just not to end consumers. Eric Hendrickson stopped working on modern lenses when he couldn't get parts but once he was able to get parts from Ricoh starting working on some autofocus lenses again.

time will tell

my repair guy stated that it didn't feel mechanical to him as he manipulated the dial but when I found the warranty he didn't open it up and just told me to send it in

thanks everyone for the good thoughts

Our repair depot has determined that your device will need to be repaired directly by Pentax. Having Pentax repair your device, ensures that the it will be repaired to OEM standards.

In general, this manufacturer takes 2-3 weeks to complete repair. When your device is repaired an email notification from us with tracking information will be sent to you.

Like the threads I linked above said - they end up sending the equipment back to the manufacturer for repair.

The big question now is will they send it to Precision or back to Japan. Perhaps we will know after you get the camera back.

when I sent another lens needing repair to Precision I was able to keep track of what was going on with it

and they were very cooperative with me

now, I don't know how I am to track this camera's progress since, if it goes to Precision, I don't know if it will be under my name or Square Deal

I am trying to contact Square Deal to see what they can tell me.

well, as Paul Harvey would have said, here's " the rest of the story ":

I got my K 3 back today, packed in a big box filled with foam peanuts, and wrapped multiple times in big bubble wrap

( it might have survived a trip over Niagara Falls )

the documentation was from square trade [ giving no indication what Pentax repair facility did the actual work ]

" functionality " check list along with visual inspection done and signed off

I can now access all of the modes

no indication on how the camera was prepared. repaired

so can any one pass me the salt I hear that it helps to eat crow if you use it.

Given the time frame I would say the repair was done in the US which most likely means by Precision. If it was sent to Japan it would have taken a minimum of four weeks - based on reports of other posters having equipment sent to Japan by Precision.

Would you like that hot or cold?
