1.4x-L Converter-A issue

I have an issue with my copy of the aforementioned teleconverter. Some time ago, the latch on the lens side of the converter stopped engaging. I can twist off a lens without needing to press the release button. Any lens mounted on the converter is therefore not securely attached and could disengage accidentally.

I want to attempt the repair myself, but am interested to hear what you think I'm going to encounter when I open up the converter. I'm imagining a broken spring or maybe a best case scenario spring?

Thanks for your advice.

Is the latching button free to move, suggesting a broken spring, or has it jammed in the unlatched position, suggesting some "foreign matter" in where it shouldn't be.
I've not disassembled one of these specifically, but my experiences with removing the lens mount from a camera would imply there's a whole hatful of little springs and contacts in there who are dying to "go walkabout"
Good luck!

I believe it is stuck in the unlatched position, therefore foreign matter is probably the culprit. Maybe I'll find some hidden treasure? Thanks for the advice... I will try and keep the fiddly bits on a leash.

You probably know this, but one way I have found to prevent the fiddly bits going exploring is to perform the dismantling inside a large ziplock bag, hopefully one large enough to admit hands at each top corner while fitting neatly round the wrists. This limits the travel of the small items to only the most essential, which escape anyway - but at least you have fewer bits to chase.
