This photo was taken near the top of Mt Evans in Colorado last July 2019 shortly after sunrise. Can you imagine living in this place? The beauty and the joy of living. But life is full of contrast. Not only is there beauty and life, but this is only a few short months of the year. Much of the year at 12,000 feet, any only about 50 vertical feet from tree line, is lived under harsh winter weather with freezing temperature, howling hurricane forced winds, and piles of show.

You don't see the winter unless you know the two plants. The young fresh flower is but a few weeks old. The grizzled fallen bare barked, but alive, tree is a bristle cone pine. It is probably dozens and maybe hundreds of years old. These two plants have had very different lives.

To me it is as if the two plants are talking to each other. The old bristle cone is saying, "Welcome to Mt Evans young flower fella. This is a majestic joyous place. But it is not always summer. But don't you worry. I have you covered. I will protect you." The young yellow flower replies, "I want to grow up to be just like you Mr. Bristle Cone."
