An arrangement of items that were lying on the table on our lanai (patio) under the shade of a Hau tree in Oahu. The Hau tree has yellow blossoms that turn a vibrant reddish brown just before they fall to the ground.

Luscious, playful arrangement expressing the essence and transformative quality of "vacation" -- travel, unplugged relaxation (no cell phone), nature, fragrant flowers, music, reading and dreaming under the canopy of a tree. So many elegant layers to this still life -- although naturalistic, it also seems hyperreal -- another aspect of being outside of everyday life while away. The table's curve in the top left corner echoes the curves of the ukulele, leaves and flowers. The Hau flower shifting colors makes me think of a sunset as day moves into dusk. Touches of yellow from the leaves, bottom of the paperback, and the center of the flower become a reminder of its earlier yellow bloom. Dappled light on the uke plays against the oval design on the book, while gentler light and shadows in the translucent glass textures add more subtle and unexpected shapes and colors. Filled with wit including choice of novel and the vertical shape near the top which looks like it's both above and below the table top. And the only figures are those about to leap out of the book cover. The image is also a reminder of what photography can capture -- within a moment that light could change and leaves and flowers float off on a breeze as a hand lifts the uke to start strumming. I feel like I'm on vacation just looking at the photograph. Brilliant -- NOMINATED!
