A night in the orchard

We got a stary night last night and I just had to run out to the orchard and capture this shot.

Very good. Did you do some illumination of the trees like "painting" with a flashlight?

I did try the flashlight idea, but that made too much light given the fact the aperture was up to F3.2 with a 400 ASA setting, for 20 seconds to get the stars. So, what I did (warning, could be lenghty):
-in post, I lightened the photo greatly and enlarged it.
-I created a mask of just the sky area by using the lasso tool; then, added to that the detail between leaves by using the selection tool with "contiguous cells UNselected.
-with the sky selected, I darkened it to get the night sky appearance.
-change the selection to "inverse" to darken the trees and grass separately: leaving them slightly illuminated.
-there was still a light edge around the trees to be treated. I enlarged the photo, again, and used the selection (contiguous cells off) too pick the light blue colors that remained in the photo. Darkened those cells appropriately.
But, that was all it took! : o
