Illusions between open windows and walled up and painted windows, in via della Madonna dei Monti in the center of Rome.
History of taxes and rights.
The road follows a 2,000-year-old road, called the "Argiletum", an ancient Roman road that connected the Roman Forum to the "Suburra". Suburra was the first suburban village of the primitive city of Rome, located on the Palatine Hill where the city was founded.
Since the Middle Ages, the Pope in Rome and other rulers in Europe had levied a tax on property owners, which varied according to the number and size of windows in the house. Those who did not pay did not have the right to windows.
The owners of more modest buildings, in order not to have further taxes to pay, decided to wall them up or still others to make fake windows drawn in trompe-l'oeil on the walls of the buildings.
