Moonset on Country Road (DFA 24-70mm/pixel shift)

I struggled to know where to put the exposure on this shot -- too dark and you don't see any detail, but too light and you don't realize that it is the moon (you may not anyway). I tried to split the difference, but it was pretty dark when I shot it -- probably 45 minutes or an hour before sunrise.

Long exposures are can be really tricky to work out the correct exposure for visually, Cameras can perceive things we cannot with the naked eye. I sometimes take a shot at a high ISO and work the correct exposure backwards: this method also helps to tell if flare from point light sources is going to be an issue as there is nothing quite like spending an hour in the cold and dark only to find out there are several ghost lights in hard to clone out areas. If I'm really uncertain about exposure I'll bracket exposures by 2~3 stops and blend them by hand in post. Timelapse sequences can also be a headache as rapidly changing mixed light sources can often deliver very unpredictable results*.

All challenges considered, it's a nice image though.

*yes, I'm a colour balance correction nut, sometimes I'll shoot Timelapse sequences in RAW so I can clone out flare spots and correct any colour balance flaws in post and assemble the movie in another program.
