And of course, the next question would be "Why not just use pixel shift?"
Pixel shift does each colour channel separately and seems to from my observation ad more than the equivalent of 6 MP of resolution to the image, (on IR the K-1 Pixel shift images as actually clearer than a Nikon D850 image and really cleans up false colour, noise etc..) I'm curious about the kind of changes you get with stacking.
Hi Normhead, I have to admit I didn't study each image in absolute detail and light was changing a bit.
I wanted the near foreground (including right lower corner) to be sharp if possible and the farer background too. I guess three images would have been sufficient to get the best stacked DOF. But the slow exposure time may be a general problem in this stack.
Using PSR could have been the best solution - maybe. - I often forget this possibility ...
... and my experiences are mixed with this tech - sometimes astounding better, sometimes not.
Looking at images of 900px size my be hard to discover. So the word
significantly better may be a bit oversized.
- The last image of the stack seams not to be far from the stacked version, I guess. Have a look at the images by yourself. As far as I know you are very experienced so you may find some things I didn't realize. Others may scroll ahead.
I send you a PM with links to the full sized last shot and the stacked image. Maybe there's something in for you?!
From near to far ... without adjustments ... in 900px ...
