At the Petting Zoo (DFA 24-70mm)

Fantastic shots! Really like the bald eagle. How close were you?

This morning I had an eagle fly right over my head, about 20' above me. Did not have a camera on me at the time, only my dog. Amazing creatures!

These were actually taken at the Cincinnati Zoo, so I was pretty close. They have some injured birds there that can't be released back into the wild.

So, I have a new lens, the DFA *50 f1.4. It really is a sweet lens. It is sharp wide open and smaller than I thought it would be, based on various comments I have read on the Forums. Sure, it is big for a 50mm lens, but for the level of sharpness and correction it offers it isn't that big -- and it is still quite a bit smaller than the DFA 24-70 or DFA 15-30 that I shoot with all of the time.

I don't normally shoot at f1.4, but I did for the second two shots, mainly to see how performance was at those levels.

I guess this means I'll probably be selling my DA *55 down the road at some point.

Country Road at Sunset (DFA *50)

Bearded Iris (DFA *50 -- shot at f1.4)

Aria (DFA *50 -- shot at f1.4)

When this lens was availlable at a fair I made some test shots with it on my KP. I also was surprised how well it felt using it even with this camera. But at the time I did't want to buy it since I had other priorities. Still one of the lenses on my list - or the more lightweight DA*55.

Afghan women's soccer team

I was out shooting along the Yarra river in Melbourne today. As I was finishing up, I noticed a lot of girls and women arriving at Ron Barassi Snr Park for a game of soccer, so I decided to stay a while and shoot their game. I had the K1 and DFA* 70-200 with me, which was adequate, though if I'd known I would have taken the K3iii. Anyway, it turned out there were many professional photographers there, and the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Corporation). It had to be something special.

With the fall of Afghanistan to the Taliban, life become impossible for many women who excelled in all sorts of areas. Some of the elite soccer players, including the national team, managed to get out of the country. A group of them ended up in Australia. The top ranking Melbourne Victory club (which fields both men's and women's teams in the national comps) has taken them under its wings and they are now playing in a (lowish level for now) suburban league in Melbourne. They drew their first game last week, but were doing much better today, 4-0 in the first half (when I left). Here are a few of the 600+ shots I took.

Warming up

The goalie getting in some pre-match practice

Former Socceroo and high-profile commentator and human rights advocate Craig Foster, being interviewed during the game by the ABC

The best player on the park winding up for a shot (she scored twice in the first half)

Race down the flank

Celebrating a goal (it feels so good after six months being unable to play)

Nice to stumble into an interesting event.

But soccer played at a park named after Ron Barassi.

Ron Barassi Senior, the father of Ronald Dale Barassi. Ron Snr also played VFL football for Melbourne, and was the first VFL footballer killed in WW2, in 1941 at Tobruk.

I grew up when the second Ron Barassi had become a legend, including for his style of coaching, which in soccer is called managing.

Tobruk, one of the famous battles we grew up hearing about.
