Who will use the K1 for serious Birding??

So all who plan to use K1 for birds,BIF ,etc.. please stand up

I know the FPS is not the fastest,but if AF can lock on better with my 150-450 (than on K3II) then I will be happy
for static birds the extra MP should give exquisite feather details & low light shots should be possible at ISO 1600 I hope,maybe even 3200 for some birds..

All feedback welcome

I'm definitely planning on using it for static birds and flocks. I will see how it performs compared to the K3 for BIF. I'm very happy with the K3 for BIF.

Like you (I think) I'll be using my DFA 150-450 on the K1 and then decide what role my K3 plays from that point on. I'm anticipating the K3 wont get used much.

Yes I think the same,Ok crop is 16MP,but if cleaner noise wise,then not much use for K3II...

I think another thing comes in to play quite naturally as well, this is the fact that we have taken lots of shots of BIF etc by now, so we come more discerning and look to place ourselfs better (time and place etc) to get better images rather then just firing away..... so FF equipment possibly fits with this.

I've been thinking of it. Thought about selling my Sigma 150-500 and replacing it with the Pentax 150-450 but it's a lot of money to put out at once. May just get the K1 once B&H has them in stock and see how the DA 560 works in crop mode on it.

Their is a FA 250-600 for sale in the marketplace now.

I guess if Ricoh's engineering don't stop working, unless they decide to drop apsc for something else such as mirroless ff or a cost reduced 24Mp ff body or else, they'll come up with a next generation AF first mounted on a new apsc dslr (next model after the K-1). And that one might be the one to have for birding. Regarding the K-1, I think the interesting crop factor would be 1.22 rather than 1.5 so that the user would benefit from higher iso capability and still get decent reach, the point being that without proper blind/hide you need 1000mm on apsc, but with proper hiding technique (=> serious birder), you can get aways with as low as 300mm on aspc.

Ricoh has already said the DA 560 will work in FF mode.

You are correct, I just went back and read this.

Certain DA lenses are actually based on film-era optical designs, such as the DA* 200mm F2.8 and DA* 300mm F4. These two lenses, along with the DA 560mm F5.6, are actually officially supported by the K-1's full frame mode; the K-1 contains special full-frame lens correction profiles for these lenses in addition to the standard crop profiles used by all other Pentax DSLRs. Full frame mode will still need to be manually activated for these lenses.

The crop factor of the APS C vs the fullframe is a factor for me. The nature of much bird photography is that your long lenses are never long enough to get you close to the wildlife. So crop bodies always bring the subject closer for me and at higher pixel density than 16 megapixels. Having said that, I certainly wouldn't mind the K1 for situations where you can get closer to the wildlife. But shooting birds in flight probably wouldn't make that list. Would like at least 6 fps for that.

My experience is that static birds don't remain static if people move in their direction. The greater reach of APS-C may trump extra MP in that case.

I find it much more likely that they'll put the K-1's AF into the new top APS-C model. That's usually how it works, the top-of-the-line FF model gets it first, then it trickles down into APS-C territory.

They've put the K-3 AF into the K-1 + some optimization. The step up was from the K5II 11 points to K-3 27 points af module which already had provision for the 6 adjacent points enabled in the K-1, if I understood correctly.
