It seems likely to be a variation on the interval composite mode. Resulting in a single file that can be a RAW.
If this somehow knows to merge the non-startrail data into some sort of mean (thereby reducing noise) than I am thrilled. This would also be handy for merging extremely long car headlight trails in long (and semi-short) exposures too.

Or make animations in general.

After skimming the manual, hope this will stick in the final fw: No more calculations

13 Interval Shooting Options
Sets whether to start counting the time of interval from when
exposure starts or when exposure ends for Interval Shooting,
Interval Composite, and Interval Movie Record.

"One of these features is a new "Star Stream" drive mode. This mode makes shooting star trails easy by only stacking the bright star portion of each successive frame. Artifacts will be kept to a minimum and foreground exposure should remain constant. The end result can be a JPEG, RAW, or both."

Oh, movie.

Not so interested now. I like the one it created (needs a fade in to get past the first couple seconds, and a foreground of interest) in the example above. But I assume we're back to intervals and stacking for star trails in photos.
I think it's supposed to be able to work with 4K, just like interval movie. Not 100% sure, however, as the manual doesn't state it clearly, and the pre-production model didn't allow the settings to be accessed.

This is what a Ricoh rep said. So either the drive mode is being updated, or he was wrong.
