any experience with the older Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX APO ??? thanks
I just tried mine - says "Sigma APO DG" on the left of the distance window, and "70-200mm 1:2.8 II Macro HSM" on the other side. Serial 1024951 (FWIW).

Lockup.

Vaporlock.

In the words of the Malibu TV commercial "It's total gridlock, mon!"

So, no.

But like the islanders, I will wait for a firmware fix, or as a last resort, hope that Sigma has a clue.

Just received my body today, and after my obligatory 'first shot' using my original M50/1.7, (my very first Pentax lens that came with my MX back in 1976), I tried a few other lenses. I was especially interested in my Sigma twins. I have the original versions, both the 70-200/2.8 and the 100-300/4; as well as the matching EX 1.4x and EX 2.0x converters. I tried all combinations, and am happy to report that they all work well. At first, I thought the 70-200/2.8 didn't work, but then discovered that I need both the lens and the body to be in AF mode, (I had just shot a couple exposures using my A400/5.6 which is MF only, and forgot to flip the switch back to AF).

Note: Sigma says that the 100-300/4 with the 2x converter does not auto-focus, however I never had any problems with my multiple Pentax bodies over the years.

To recap:

Sigma 70-200mm 1:2.8 APO EX
Sigma 100-300mm 1:4 APO EX
Sigma APO Tele Converter 1.4x EX
Sigma APO Tele Converter 2x EX

(all first generations of these lenses)

All combinations auto-focus on my K-1 just fine. The 70-200 is really quick, the 100-300 auto-focuses like on the bodies of old.

I can confirm that the "APO DG EX Sigma 70-200 II Macro HSM" definitely does NOT work on my newly acquired K-1. It hangs. I am running firmware version v 1.10 looking forward to a fix in the next firmware upgrade soon!!!

Won't happen.

Though it is a problem of the K-1's firmware (nothing should cause a lockup, that's just plain bad error handling), it is caused by a Sigma lens. Pentax has no business relations to Sigma, Sigma has not licensed anything from Pentax, so Sigma is considered the culprit.

As stated numerous times:

There are two variants of the "70-200/2.8 APO DG EX Macro II HSM" around. Those can be discerned by looking at the exif data produced by a camera using the lens (you'd have to use something older than the K-1, obviously). The faulty lens gives LensID "8 255", whilst the working variant gives LensID "8 16".

Supposedly Sigma's repair services are abled to perform a firmware update of the lens' firmware.

Thanks for your reply.
I have checked and indeed it is the "8 255" version. I have contacted the Sigma distributor in Australia and am awaiting their reply.

My Sigma 70-200 which was not working on the K-1 is now working after a visit to the Pentax distributor - CR Kennedy - in Melbourne, Australia, While I waited, they took it in the back and "updated the firmware" (which is actually replacing some electronics in the lens) and I was on my way with a working lens! The camera turns on fine and the lens focuses fairly fast. It may be my imagination, but it feels like it focuses faster than the K-3.
They have run out of Sigma lens mounts but when they get more in stock, I was told to return it and they will replace the mount on the lens so that it doesn't scratch the camera. At the same time they will replace the front plate of the camera as the existing mount on the lens has made a created a tiny scratch . Personally, it is such a small scratch that I wouldn't have bothered to have it fixed, but they offered.

Good IDlens but still have AF issue

Hi,
I recently purchased a sigme 70-200 f/2.8 macro II, I checked the lensID. It's 8 16. So normally it will work fine.
The AF works, but when I turn on the camera, it takes a long time to work well. Let say 30s, it just works very very slowly, and then something happen and it works fine.
Do you think my copy got a problem?

Thanks guy

I sold my Sigma for this reason. It never locked on focus ever, just spun back and forth. Was totally find on the K-5IIs.

Hi every one. I bought Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX DG Makro HSM II. As it was 2009 version obviously need service to work on K1.
So I send it with K1 to Sigma Service centre. At the end it cost me 520 USD for lens and around 50 USD for maintenance, changing motherboard and Lens calibration. Bayonet change for free
I'm very happy with my combo. AF is sometimes hunting very fast AF-C is like in K1 so almost no hits if something is walking running at your position.
My question is: what TC if any could work properly. I checked and sigma data show that sigma TC is not working with this lens:
Lenses | Sigma Corporation of America
So question is what is working?
Best!

Hi All,

I got my K1 today but, to may dismay the Sigma 70-200 I have (APO DG EX MACRO HSM II, s.n. 1024360) doesn't work...

I already sent it in for mount and FW update by the local service and they stated they checked it and it was working on another client's K1.

Could be my K1 Firmware? Right now its' 1.40, I'm tempted to update it to 1.41 but I'm a bit "nervous"...y'know...

Any ideas?

L.

Sigma Lens modification for K-1 (and Metz AF58 flash)

Hi.
I bought a Pentax K-1 a week ago. I had a sigma 24-70 f2.8 HSM and Sigma 70-200 II Macro HSM, both bought second hand on Ebay. They both worked well on my Pentax K3 except for the 70-200 in live view - a problem I had read about on various forums but wasn't really bothered. I was also aware of the mounting problem and possibility of scratching the K-1 body. I contacted Sigma servicing UK about the mount modification. One lens was posted off on Thursday 31st August and the other the following day. I was told that the turn around was 7 days. Communication was excellent, I was informed when the lenses arrived and when they were dispatched. Both lenses arrive home on Wednesday 6th September, mounts modified, firmware upgraded and they both work perfectly on the K-1 (and K-3 in live view). The only cost was some packaging materials and under £20 postage in total. The service from Sigma (UK) was first class and can not be faulted. Really pleased. (To add to the satisfaction, whilst the lenses were away, I downloaded the firmware upgrade for my Metz AF58 mk1 and it also now works perfectly.)
Just wanted to publicly praise the Sigma Service Centre (UK)-great service and the modifications were free of charge.

We just tested the Sigma 70-200mm F2,8 EX DG OS HSM lens (lens ID 8/23) one minute on the K-1.
It works nicely. No shutdowns, locks and autofocuses as usual.

Please note that Sigma offered four similar lenses over the years:
  1. Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX APO
  2. Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX DG APO Makro
  3. Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX DG Makro HSM II
  4. Sigma 70-200/2.8 EX DG OS HSM
I am talking about the most recent and optically superior model with the OS, not the older ones.
Even this lens is already 6 years old.
As far as I know only HSM II with lens id 8 255 is not working with K-1.
Older non-HSM (screw drive) 70-200 f/2.8 lenses worked for me and OS HSM also worked just fine.
HSM II with lens id 8 255 needs LENS FIRMWARE update to work with K-1.
8 255 lens firmware on HSM II also has some quirks in live view focusing on some APS-C cameras.
