Three 85mm lenses on K1

Here's a link to 3 photos I took today using 3 different 85mm lenses on my K1 camera. All were shot at f/8.

All look good on Flickr, but at full size on my large monitor, the Voigtlander 90mm lens is in my opinion the winner by a hair because of slightly better edges.

Surprisingly, I'd call it a tie between the Rokinon and the Pentax lens for second.

Thanks for the comparisons! I've been shopping in the 77-85mm range for quite a while wondering which direction to head. Are there distinct differences that you've noticed at larger apertures?

Looking at the three blind I preferred the bricks on the building on the Rokinon, the grass in the foreground on the Pentax, and the left upper edge on the Voitlander.

I am curious why the grass on the Pentax was so much sharper at the same f/stop and basic lens position. Is it possible that it was focused closer - that could account for the softer edges and softer building bricks. It is also possible that with Flickr the reduced resolution isn't telling the same story you see on the big screen with the full res files.

I did a similar test a long time ago with my A* 85, my DA* 50-135, and my DA* 60-250 all at around f/5.6 - they were virtually impossible to tell apart.

Certainly, the Rokinon has good isolation and bokeh from f/1.6 to f/2.0. If shooting with wide apertures is important to you, I'd recommend you consider the Rokinon 1.4 lens.

Conversely, at the other end, the Voigtlander is outstanding at f/11 and much better than either the Pentax or the Rokinon at that aperture!

Pentax is sharper in all corners. Voigtlander is significantly softer.

Remember we are looking at smaller res jpgs - not sure I agree on all corners but the front is dramatically different.

Love it that the Pentax "85" is the inimitable DA*60-250.

Which is why when I do my tests I include the primes I have at the FL, but also all the zooms.

Which is why I run blind polls to remove my own bias in interpretation, and provide middle, bokeh and corner details. I like to be surprised, as opposed to just telling folks what I think or repeating the "common sense" mantra.
